Nepal is a federal Himalayan Republic, located in Southern Asia, between the Chinese region of Tibet to the north and India to the south. According to the Human Development Index (HDI) of the UN agency UNDP, it is among the Low-Medium Development Countries, being 143rd out of 189 nations assessed (Source: UNDP, https://tinyurl.com/yc4dpn5u).
In Nepal, the Un Raggio di Luce Onlus Foundation has been working since 2006 to respect human rights and in particular women‘s rights. Most of our interventions have always taken place in Jumla, a remote area in the north-western part of the country.
For the three-year period 2023-2026, the Women Empowerment and Livelihood Improvement (WELI) Project is underway, which continues and consolidates the activities carried out during the WELI (Women Empowerment and Livelihood Improvement) Project.
The general objective of the Initiative is to increase women‘s awareness of the rights they are entitled to, combat gender-based violence (GBV) and strengthen the role of women in the local economic system.
The project pursues this aim through a holistic approach, which addresses the problem from multiple intervention fronts: gender inequality, the excessive workload faced by women, nutrition and reproductive health, women‘s economic independence. Consequently, the activities that the project implements are:
- Professional training in the agricultural sector in collaboration with the Agriculture Knowledge Center (Nepali government office for agriculture);
- Distribution of agricultural products: seeds, greenhouse accessories, equipment, etc.
- Cycle of periodic meetings to raise awareness on gender issues and information aimed at eliminating harmful traditional practices (Harmful Traditional Practice - HTP) such as chaupadi, the isolation of women during the menstrual period;
-Cycle of meetings on maternal and child health practices;
- Events for the dissemination of information and promotion on specific social and health aspects, in schools (Kishori Club) and in communities (Community Meeting).
The project is carried out in collaboration with the local NGO "SARBODAYA NEPAL JUMLA" (whose name, sarbodaya, means "let‘s all stand up together", our historic partner since 2006.
In 2024, the activities will be co-financed by the U.B.I. - Unione Buddhista Italiana, as part of the disbursements resulting from the "8x1000" fundraiser.
The project officially started on 12/1/2023.
